Residential
Rochester Tiered Garden Re-landscape

This residential project in Rochester was a full tiered garden re-landscape with a calm, traditional finish — but a seriously tough build behind the scenes. With no machine access, a front flight of stairs, a tight alleyway and multiple tiers, everything had to be carried out by hand from start to finish.
Rather than trying to force one “perfect” level across an awkward site, Sustainable Garden Solutions worked with averages across the different areas, adjusting and rebalancing the tiers so the garden flowed better and felt more natural to move through. That created a coherent structure across the levels and allowed each zone to be finished properly without the space feeling fragmented.
The new layout was designed to be practical and family-friendly. We built warm, approachable sleeper beds to frame planting and soften the structure, added a dedicated veg growing area, and created space for a shed and storage. A yellow stock brick raised wall with raised bed frontages adds a strong traditional detail, while a central walkway keeps movement clean and simple through the garden.
At the bottom level, we extended the space to form a stronger outdoor living zone — somewhere to sit, eat and spend time, instead of the garden reading as disconnected platforms. To finish, we carried out planting and tree work so the garden wasn’t just built, but ready to enjoy straight away.
