Residential
Maidstone Three-Zone Garden with Slate & Workshop

This residential project in Maidstone was a timeless garden build made up of three distinct zones, all tied together through consistent material choices and a calm, traditional feel. The journey moves from intimate and textural, to bold and architectural, then finishes with a practical working space designed to last.
At the lower end, Sustainable Garden Solutions created a courtyard using rough slate crazy paving for a grounded finish. Clay-fired blocks were laid in a herringbone detail, paired with Chelmer Valley brickwork to keep the detailing tactile and classic. Running through the courtyard, an in-ground water rill adds movement and sound without dominating the space.
Further up the garden, we built a standout feature terrace around an existing stone. Using black and white porcelain, we set out an 8-point compass design aligned to the garden’s orientation with a sundial-inspired concept. From that centre point, radius-based setting out was used to form surrounding curved retaining walls so they sit naturally into the hillside. These walls were finished with traditional flintwork, adding real Kent character and craftsmanship.
To complete the upper section, we built an open-ended workshop barn for tools and machinery. Constructed with upcycled oak beams and finished with a composite roof, it creates a clean, strong outbuilding that’s genuinely useful without feeling like an afterthought.
