Chatham High Street Parklet Design & Build

For this commercial project in Chatham, we designed and built a pop-up parklet as part of a pioneering government pilot to widen the high street, support local shops and restaurants, and test changes to traffic movement. Sustainable Garden Solutions were tasked with delivering a “testing parklet” that could be installed quickly, left in place for the trial, then dismantled and reused rather than wasted.
We built the parklet as a modular installation, planned from day one to be deconstructed and repurposed as community planters once the trial ended. While it was in place, the public response was brilliant. People stopped, sat, and spent time there. The planting brought life into the street scene, and the widened space felt safer and more comfortable for people using the high street during the trial.
When the pilot finished, the planters were removed and donated to Sun Pier, where they were relocated and replanted. They remain there today, still full of planting and still serving the community, showing how reclaimed and upcycled design can deliver lasting value beyond a temporary high street project.
