Sustainable Interactive Garden Rochester

For this residential project in Rochester, we were asked very early on in our journey to design and build a sustainable interactive garden that felt instantly like Sustainable Garden Solutions. The brief wasn’t only about looks. We set out to create a space that could be properly used day to day: family-friendly, hands-on, ecological, and full of life through the seasons.
We began by working with what was already on site, prioritising reclaimed and upcycled materials wherever possible. Cut-down trunks were repurposed as feature and display elements, helping keep carbon stored and giving the timber a second life. Existing paving was carefully lifted, cleaned, and re-laid to form a new hosting and gathering area. That approach shaped the whole project: less waste, more creativity, and a garden that feels grounded in its place.
To make the garden truly interactive, we created raised play structures and routes above ground level, including assault-course style elements with climbing and balance features. These timber structures were designed to do double duty, functioning as playful built forms while also supporting habitat value within the garden.
Living elements were integrated throughout to soften the structures and boost biodiversity, including living wall features and planted vertical surfaces. We also built wildlife support into the design with dedicated bee, bird and bat hotels to encourage nesting and shelter.
Finally, we wrapped the space in wildflower turf so it could mature over time into a softer, more dynamic landscape. As it develops, the garden changes week by week, supports pollinators, and brings the movement and texture you only get when nature is properly invited in. The result is an interactive garden that encourages play and curiosity while quietly doing the work of restoring habitat at the same time.
